Event is free, but please order a minimum 1 drink at the bar (drinks start at ¥500)

The theme of this exhibition is “rethinking solidarity.” Since the triple disaster in March 2011, the word “kizuna (bond)” has been used, to the point of becoming cliché, in various situations and contexts to express the nation’s solidarity with the survivors. Now, nearing on 5 years since the disaster, our commitment to solidarity is being put to the test of time. Will reminders of the survivors and the nuclear disaster be seen as a wet blanket amidst the excitement for the Tokyo Olympics? How far is society willing to go to sympathize with strangers who are going through chronic suffering? This is question is being asked all around the world as we watch the Syrian refugee crisis unfold. Who is “us,” and who is “them”?

OVER THE BORDER: Announcement of our 3rd Exhibition!!

We are pleased to inform you the up-to-date schedule for our 3rd exhibition at OVER THE BORDER!!

This time we host the private exhibition of Haruko Sasakawa, an unique artist who faces with various social issues in rather detached way, with eyes full of  biting ironies.

Don’t miss out, just for your safety!

***********************************************

Haruko Sasakawa solo exhibition “For Your Safety M, ltd”

2012.10.13 (Sat.) – 2012.12.15 (Sat.)

12:00-19:00 / closed on Sundays・ Mondays・public holidays and  2012.11.20(Tue.)-2012.11.23(Fri.)

Opening reception 2012.10.13 (Sat.) 18:00-20:00

It reminded me of the 3.11 crisis when I heard Haruko Sasakawa’s exhibition plan, “For Your Safety M, ltd”. Nuclear plant that boasted the highest level of its safety in the worlds, and the great seawall of Tarō built from the lesson through the experience with tsunami, both collapsed in a moment with the broken myth of safety. The myth of safety once indicated the importance of its comfort and reliability like a charm rather than an infallible safety. And the society is fraught with not only natural disasters but many dangers. We can imagine dangers and that’s what has kept us buying even imaginary safety, even if it is not being really safe but is trusty enough like a charm. / Akihito.Ooba
